In Germany the scarecrows they were originally wooden and they did resemble witches. In medieval Britain the boys and the girls were used like live scarecrows or “ Big Scarers”. They patrol the fields and their crops and if they saw birds they scare it waving their arms and throwing stones. This eventually led to farmers sacks with straw and using painted gourds to make heads and faces to create “straw men” and scare birds.

Immigrant German farmers began making humans-like scarecrows called `` bootsamon” or “bogeyman”. They would dress up with old clothes, with straw and a red bandana tied around their neck.
